What Else You Need
- A 5/8 inch threaded backing plate. Mr Hard Water supply a 5 inch backing plate with the Mr Hard Water Variable Speed Polisher; a separate backing plate is not currently listed online — ask us.
- Hook-and-loop polishing pads and Mr Hard Water cleaning powder or liquid glass polish. These are not currently listed online — ask us before you start the job.
Where hard water removal is done
Shower screens, glass, tile and stone that have been etched by mineral deposits. A drill-driven backing plate gives you controlled speed and pressure in a small area, which is what these surfaces need — a rotary polisher is too fast and too large for a shower recess.
Drill or Polisher?
The adaptor suits small jobs, tight shower recesses and occasional work. For regular hard water removal, a dedicated variable-speed polisher with a bail handle is easier to control on vertical glass and is built for continuous running. See the Mr Hard Water Variable Speed Polisher.
Start slow and keep it wet
Heat is what damages glass and stone during polishing. Low speed, light pressure and enough lubrication to keep the surface cool. If the pad is dry and the surface is hot, you are grinding rather than polishing.
Test first
Toughened glass and coated shower screens do not all respond the same way, and some coatings cannot be polished at all without permanent marking. Test in a corner low on the screen.
Safe Use
- Wear eye protection — slurry flicks off the pad.
- Use a cordless drill around water. Do not use a mains-powered drill in a wet shower recess.
- Tighten the backing plate fully by hand before starting and check it again during the job.
- Keep the pad flat to the surface so the edge does not dig in.
