ODORx 9-D-9 Smoke Odour Counteractant 3.8Ltr

9-D-9 is a highly-concentrated general purpose smoke odour counteractant.

9-D-9 is specially formulated to counteract fire and related smoke odours.

It is important that the solution come in direct contact with all contaminated surfaces that might be a source of the odour. This provides an initial reduction of strong, objectionable odours. What It Is For — and What It Is Not

9-D-9 is a surface-applied counteractant. It is diluted with water and spray-applied until smoke residue deposits are saturated, so the solution reaches the surfaces the odour is coming from.

• It is not a fogging product. The directions say to apply it with a compression sprayer or an airless paint sprayer only, and not with a fogger. For thermal fogging, see the ODORx Thermo-55 range, such as Thermo-55 Thermal Fog Cherry.
• It does not replace cleaning. Smoke residue that holds odour still has to be cleaned off, removed or sealed. 9-D-9 gives an initial reduction of strong odours while that work is done.
• Where surfaces will be sealed after cleaning, a smoke odour sealer such as Fiberlock RECON is a separate step.

Safety — Read the SDS Before Use

Legend Brands' Safety Data Sheet (US GHS format, 13 August 2025) classifies the 9-D-9 concentrate as Danger:

• Flammable liquid and vapour (Category 3; flash point 27 °C). Contains isopropyl alcohol (10–25%).
• Causes serious eye damage (Category 1).
• May cause an allergic skin reaction (skin sensitiser, Category 1).
• Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child (reproductive toxicity, Category 2).

What that means on the job, from the SDS:

• Wear eye and face protection, protective gloves and protective clothing. Safety glasses with side shields are the minimum.
• Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and hot surfaces, and use non-sparking tools. Take care in fire-damaged buildings where there may be damaged wiring or hot spots.
• Ventilate the work area. Wear suitable respiratory protection if ventilation is not adequate, and do not breathe spray mist.
• Keep occupants and unprotected people out of the area while spraying and until it has been ventilated.
• Store in the original container, tightly closed, in a cool, well-ventilated place, locked up.

Use Instructions

• Apply 9-D-9 with a compression sprayer or an airless paint sprayer only. Do not use a fogger.
• Preparing RTU solution: Add 3 ounces of 9-D-9 with enough water to make one gallon of ready-to-use solution (23 mL / L). Saturation spray smoke residue deposits.
• Detoxifying smoke- and fire-damaged job sites: Treating smoke-damaged surfaces and charred materials with 9-D-9 solution inhibits the evaporation of toxic fire-related vapours. For charred wood or additional odour control: Add 1 ounce of Last Resort™ to each gallon of 9-D-9 solution as prepared above (8 mL / L).
• Use with other products: 9-D-9 may be added to other water-based cleaning solutions to increase their effectiveness.

Can I fog 9-D-9?

No. The directions say compression sprayer or airless paint sprayer only, and not a fogger. Use a product made for fogging, such as the ODORx Thermo-55 range, if the job calls for it.

Does 9-D-9 replace cleaning the smoke residue?

No. It reduces strong odours when it contacts the source surfaces, but residue that holds odour still needs to be cleaned, removed or sealed.

Can I add it to my cleaning solution?

The directions say 9-D-9 may be added to other water-based cleaning solutions. Check the other product's label and SDS for compatibility before mixing.

Why is there a dangerous goods surcharge?

The concentrate is a Class 3 flammable liquid (UN1993) and ships as a limited quantity, which carries a DG surcharge.

Do I need a respirator?

The SDS calls for suitable respiratory protection where ventilation is not adequate, and says not to breathe spray mist. Saturation spraying indoors usually means a respirator; select one to AS/NZS 1716 and your site's risk assessment.

How far does a bottle go?

At 23 mL/L, a 3.8 L bottle makes about 160 L of ready-to-use solution. Coverage per litre depends on how porous the surfaces are and how heavy the residue is — saturation is the goal, not a set rate.
