Carbon is for odour, not for particles
A carbon filter adsorbs gases and odours — smoke, VOCs, the smell that lingers after a fire or a sewage loss. It does very little for particulate, which is the HEPA’s job. The two are used together because they solve different halves of the same complaint.
Carbon has a finite capacity. Once it is saturated it stops adsorbing and simply becomes a restriction — and unlike a loaded particulate filter, there is no visual sign. Change it on schedule, not on appearance.
