Pre-drill the pilot holes
Delmhorst recommends pre-drilling pilot holes for this electrode, and it is sound advice. Driving 82 mm insulated pins into seasoned hardwood without a pilot bends pins, strips retainers and does the slide hammer no good either. Pilot holes also give repeatable depth, which matters if the readings are going into a report.
Frequently asked questions
Why not use the 26-ES on heavy timber?
The 26-ES reaches 1 1/8 inches. On a 200 mm pole that is still the shell. The 18-ES reaches 3 1/4 inches.
Can I use it inside a wall cavity?
For cavity work the 21-E deep wall probe is the right tool — same pins, but a probe designed to be pushed rather than hammered.
What size pilot hole?
Slightly under the pin diameter, so the pin is held rather than loose. Test on an offcut of the same material first.
