Why a Hammer Probe
Surface readings tell you about the surface. Timber and structural substrates dry from the outside in, so a surface reading on a wet joist reads dry while the core is still holding water — and the drying job gets signed off early.
A hammer probe drives insulated pins to depth so you can read a gradient rather than a single number.

What we see in the field
The probe's meant to give you a deeper reading, not a reason to hit harder. Keep those insulated pins straight, record the depth and check what's inside the wall before driving them in.
