Product Overview

Actichem Tile & Grout Power is the heavy-duty alkaline cleaner in the hard floor range. Removing grease, oils and general grime is what it does exceptionally well. It is also versatile, which is why cleaning specialists use it on tiles, natural stone and concrete that need an extra brutal hit to get a result. As well as grease and oily grime, it quickly removes carbon build-up from almost any hard surface.

It is the alkaline counterpart to Actichem’s acid restorers. Where the acid products dissolve mineral scale, cement smear and efflorescence, Tile & Grout Power attacks organic soil — grease, oil, carbon and food residue. It is also the correct choice on acid-sensitive stone, where an acid restorer would etch the surface.

This product is an excellent replacement for PowerClean TileClenz PRO.

Application Areas and Surface Suitability

Ideally suited for use on all resilient flooring, including concrete floors, ceramic tiles, terracotta and grout lines. Excellent in applications such as industrial kitchens, refuse compactor areas, workshop floors, food processing facilities, bakeries and public eating areas. It is safe on all man-made tiles, natural stone products, grout and concrete at recommended dilutions.

Do not use or allow Tile & Grout Power to contact painted surfaces, non-ferrous metal surfaces — especially aluminium — or polymer-coated flooring. Caustic attacks aluminium readily, and the reaction produces hydrogen.

How to Use

1. Read and understand the SDS before use.
2. Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity to chemicals.
3. Tile & Grout Power is corrosive. Use chemical goggles, gloves, protective clothing and warning signage — see Safety below for the full SDS specification.

Dilution

• Deep clean applications — 1 part Tile & Grout Power to 10 to 20 parts water (100 to 50 ml per litre)
• Standard cleaning applications — 1 part to 80 to 120 parts water (12 to 8 ml per litre)

Application

1. Apply the solution with a mop and bucket, an auto-scrubber, or a pressure washer.
2. Agitate heavily soiled areas using a stiff brush, an auto-scrubber, or a slow-speed rotary scrubber.
3. Allow 10 minutes dwell time and re-agitate.
4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Safety

Our page has always described Tile & Grout Power as corrosive, and that is correct. What it did not carry was the signal word, the hazard statements, the transport classification, the full PPE specification or first aid. Those are below.

Tile & Grout Power is classified as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL and DANGEROUS GOODS under the Model WHS Regulations and the ADG Code. It is a Poisons Schedule 6 substance.

• Actives: potassium hydroxide 10 to less than 30%; sodium hydroxide, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate, monoethanolamine and potassium pyrophosphate, each below 10%
• Transport: UN1760, Class 8, Packing Group II. Limited quantity threshold 1 litre — every pack size we sell is above it and travels as regulated dangerous goods.

pH 14 is the top of the scale. This is caustic soda and caustic potash chemistry. It saponifies fat, which is exactly why it removes grease so well — and skin is largely fat and protein. Caustic burns are often painless at first and deepen over minutes, so a splash that does not sting is not a splash you can ignore.

Personal protective equipment

The SDS specifies chemical goggles, elbow-length PVC gloves, overalls and a PVC apron, with access to an eye wash unit and a safety shower. Use warning signage — a wet caustic floor is a hazard to anyone who walks onto it.

First aid

Eyes. Flush continuously with running water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids apart. Transport to hospital without delay.

Skin. Immediately flush with large amounts of water and remove contaminated clothing. Transport to hospital or a doctor.

Food premises — rinse properly

This product is used in bakeries, food factories and public eating areas, and it works well there. It is a cleaner, not a sanitiser, and at pH 14 it must be rinsed thoroughly with potable water before any food contact surface returns to service. Where a disinfection step is also required, complete the clean, rinse, and then apply a TGA-listed disinfectant such as Actichem Percide.

Never Mix With Acid

Tile & Grout Power is a strong alkali. The acid restorers we sell for the same floors are its chemical opposite. Mixing a strong acid with a strong alkali releases a great deal of heat very quickly, which can boil and spit corrosive liquid out of the bucket. Avoid contact with acids and oxidising agents.

Never mix, and never allow contact in a bucket, drain, extraction tank or on the floor, with:

• Actichem Grout Restore 60 — 60% phosphoric acid
• Actichem Grout Restore 20
• Actichem Tile & Grout Restore
• Actichem Crete Clean and Actichem Rust Remover
• Any acid rinse, descaler or efflorescence remover

Sequencing on the same floor is common and is fine — if you rinse. Alkaline clean, rinse thoroughly with clean water, then acid restore, then neutralise. What is not fine is a shared bucket, a shared auto-scrubber tank, or an unrinsed floor between steps.

Also avoid contact with aluminium and other non-ferrous metals. Caustic attack on aluminium produces hydrogen, which is flammable.

• Actichem Tile & Grout Restore — acid. Use for mineral scale, cement smear and efflorescence. Tile & Grout Power will not shift those.
• Actichem Grout Restore 20 and Grout Restore 60 — stronger acid restorers

The short version: greasy, oily, carbon or food soil is an alkaline job. Chalky, scaly, cementitious or rust-stained soil is an acid job. Acid-sensitive stone is always an alkaline job.
