Sonin 50210 LED Moisture Tool

Regular price $53.55

SKU:AC792

The Sonin 50210 LED Moisture Tool is a quick moisture indicator for cleaners, inspectors, contractors, loss adjusters and homeowners. Find out if excess moisture is present: press the metal contact into the surface to determine the extent of a moisture problem. The more lights on, the higher the moisture level.

9-volt battery required (not included).

How It Works

Four LEDs light in sequence as the reading rises. Sonin gives the tool's range as 14% to 20% across the four lights and lists it for timber, plasterboard (sheetrock) and carpet. Sonin does not publish which material scale the percentages refer to or the value for each light, so read it as a relative indicator — more lights means wetter — not as a moisture content figure.

Where a Simple Indicator Earns Its Place

This is an indicative tool, not a calibrated instrument. Its value is speed and communication: a quick check of whether an area is wet, and something a customer or an adjuster can look at and understand immediately.

For readings that go into a report or a decision, use a calibrated meter — a pin probe or a proper moisture meter — and record the make, model and the calibration check.

Using It on a Job

  1. Fit a fresh 9 V battery.
  2. Take a reading on a similar material you know is dry, so you know what "dry" looks like on this tool.
  3. Press the contact firmly into the surface and note how many lights come on.
  4. Work outward from the wet area until the reading matches your dry reference, and mark the edge.
  5. Confirm the edges and the drying goal with a calibrated meter before you record them.

Only compare readings on the same material. Plasterboard, timber and carpet respond differently, so four lights on one material does not mean the same as four lights on another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a moisture meter?

It is a moisture indicator. It shows whether a surface is wetter or drier, but it gives no number and has no calibration check, so it should not be used to sign off drying.

What do the four lights mean?

Sonin gives an overall range of 14% to 20% across the four lights but does not publish the value for each light or the material scale. Treat more lights as wetter and confirm with a meter.

Can I use the readings in a report?

Use them to find and map the wet area. For figures in a report or insurance file, use a calibrated meter such as the Delmhorst BDX-20 or Protimeter MMS3 and record the make, model and calibration check.

How does it compare with the WetChec and HydroSensor?

The Dri-Eaz WetChec gives a single audible wet/dry signal, and the Dri-Eaz HydroSensor is a long probe for carpet and underlay. The Sonin gives a four-step visual scale, which is easier to show a customer.
