Overview
Replacement throttle cable for Sapphire Scientific 370SS and 570SS truckmounts. Sapphire part number 40-031, listed in the parts schedule as Cable, Throttle.
It can also be used on other carpet cleaning truckmounts. Note: it must be trimmed to fit.
Trimming it — and getting that right
Because the cable is supplied long and cut to suit the installation, the fit is in your hands rather than the manufacturer's. Two things are worth doing before you cut.
Measure the old cable, do not eyeball the run. Lay the new cable along the route the old one took, including the bends, before marking it. A cable cut to the straight-line distance will bind on the first corner.
Leave the full range of travel. Check that the engine's throttle lever reaches both stops — full idle and full throttle — with the control at each end of its travel, before you commit to a length. A cable that is slightly short will not reach idle, which shows up as a machine that will not drop back and an operator who assumes the governor has failed.
Cut the outer cleanly and dress the end. A crushed or burred outer casing binds the inner wire, and a throttle that is sticky when new stays sticky.
Diagnosing a throttle problem
A stiff or unresponsive throttle is not always the cable:
- Stiff through the whole range — a binding or corroded cable, or an outer that has been kinked. Usually the cable.
- Stiff at one point only — a kink or a tight bend in the run. Re-route it rather than replacing it.
- Free at the control but the engine does not respond — a slipped clamp at the engine end, or a governor problem. Check the clamp before you order a cable.
- Will not return to idle — a return spring, or a cable that is too short. Check both.
Lubricate before you replace. A cable that has been on a machine for years and gone stiff will often come back with the right lubricant and a bit of working.

Sapphire list the choke cable as 40-032. It is not currently a stocked CCW line — ask us if you need one. If a machine's throttle cable has reached the end of its life, the choke cable of the same age generally has too.
Frequently asked questions
Which machines does it fit?
Sapphire Scientific 370SS and 570SS, and it can be adapted to other truckmounts because it is trimmed to fit.
How long is it supplied?
Long enough to be trimmed. Measure your run before cutting — send us the measurement first if you want us to check.
Is the choke cable the same part?
No. That is 40-032.
Do I need special tools?
A good cable cutter. Side cutters crush the outer casing and cause binding.
