A gasket is what makes the air filter an air filter
If the gasket is missing, hardened or split, unfiltered air bypasses the element and goes straight into the engine. Truckmounts work in dusty driveways, car parks and construction sites, and ingested dust is the fastest way to wear bores and rings.
Check it every time the filter is serviced. It costs almost nothing and it protects the most expensive component on the machine.
