It is a plumbing adaptor: it takes a 3/8 inch female port down to a ¼ inch male fitting. In truckmount and portable plumbing, that is one of the most frequently needed size changes there is.

Reading the size correctly
Bushings are described male-first, and getting that the wrong way round is the single most common ordering mistake with fittings. This one is 3/8 male into ¼ female: it screws into a 3/8 inch female port, and a ¼ inch male fitting screws into it.
If you need the opposite — a ¼ inch male into a 3/8 inch female — that is a different part. HydraMaster list 052-061 (3/8" NPT × ¼" FPT) and 052-064 (½" NPT × 3/8" FPT) among others. Ask us and we will pick the right one.
Fitting advice
NPT is a tapered thread. It seals on the thread, which means it needs sealant — PTFE tape or a liquid thread sealant suited to the temperature and chemistry. Start the tape two threads back from the end so you do not push a tail of tape into the line.
Do not over-tighten brass into brass. A tapered thread wound in too hard will split a female port, and on a manifold that turns a fifty-cent fitting into a real repair.
Each reduction adds a restriction. On a solution line, stacking adaptors to reach the size you want costs pressure at the tool — if you find yourself using three fittings to make one connection, it is worth getting the right single fitting instead.
