Part number history
Briggs & Stratton have superseded 492341. The current genuine part number is 591459, which Briggs & Stratton list as superseding:
- 492341
- 490586
- 491312
- 495859
- 690248
- 715231
If your engine, parts list or old coil shows any of these numbers, this is the part. The earlier version of this page listed 591459 among the numbers this coil "replaces" — the direction is the other way: 591459 is the current number and replaces the others.
What it fits
- Briggs & Stratton 9, 12.5 and 14 hp Vanguard V-Twin engine models from 1990 to present — 2 required per engine.
- Briggs & Stratton 12–16 hp side-valve, single-cylinder (L-Head) engine models from 1980 to 2003: 161430, 161432, 161436, 161437, 111902, 111982, 286702, 286707, 28B702, 28B707, 28C707, 28D707, 31G777, 303447, 303777, 31P777, 287707.
Carpet Cleaners Warehouse has not yet verified this coil against the engine parts lists for specific truckmounts, so this page does not name a machine.
Identifying your engine
Briggs & Stratton engines are identified by model, type and code, stamped or printed on a label on the engine itself. Parts changed at specific code dates within a single engine model, so read the engine label rather than assuming from the machine model. It takes a minute and it is the difference between the right part and a return.
Fitting advice
Isolate the battery before you start.
Photograph the connections before you disconnect anything. Reproducing an existing loom arrangement from memory is where most electrical repairs go wrong.
Set the armature air gap to the figure in the engine's service manual. The gap is engine-specific; send us the engine numbers if you do not have the manual.
Check the earth. A great many faults blamed on a component are a corroded earth path, and that costs nothing to rule out.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a genuine Briggs & Stratton part?
Yes — a genuine replacement armature coil. Briggs & Stratton's current number for it is 591459.
How many does my engine take?
Two on the 9, 12.5 and 14 hp Vanguard V-Twin engines listed above — one per cylinder. One on the single-cylinder L-Head engines.
My old coil says 591459. Is this the same part?
Yes. 591459 is the current Briggs & Stratton number and supersedes 492341.
Should I replace both coils on a V-Twin?
Ask us. Tell us the engine numbers and the symptom and we will help you decide rather than have you order one and find you needed two.
Send us the model, type and code numbers from your engine label and we will confirm the correct part, the quantity, and anything else worth doing while you are in there.
