Product Overview
Actichem POG is a citrus solvent stain remover, a super strength blend of powerful polar and non-polar solvents for removing tough oily soils, grease and paints. It is also formulated for use as an effective cleaning booster in a prespray solution for heavily soiled carpets.
POG has become a popular choice with cleaning specialists because it is not only a versatile spot and stain remover for carpets and upholstery, but is also very effective on hard surfaces. Mixing POG with Actisorb draws oils out of natural stone and concrete surfaces.
Actichem POG is a great replacement for PowerClean POG.
Which pack size do you need?
This 500 ml trigger spray is the spotting pack — ready to use, on the truck, for individual spots and stains. If you are using POG as a prespray booster you will go through it quickly, so the 5 litre is the better buy. The product inside both is identical.
Benefits
- Powerful — a high-performance water-rinseable blend of solvents, wetting agents and emulsifiers.
- Oil stains — removes tough oily stains, paints, cosmetics, grease, oily spots, adhesives and most inks.
- Low VOC — and it does not meet the dangerous goods definition of a flammable liquid, because its flash point is above 60 °C. It is still a combustible liquid (H227) and still classified DANGER — see the Safety section, which has been corrected.
- Booster — effective added to prespray solutions for heavily soiled carpet.
Application Areas and Surface Suitability
POG is suitable for use on all carpet fibres, fabrics and hard surfaces. However, some surfaces are solvent sensitive, including some carpet backings, some plastics and polymer coatings.
How to Use
Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity to chemicals. Do not use on solvent-sensitive surfaces, including bitumen-backed carpeting.
Stain removal: ready to use.
- Sponge or scrape up any surface spot material.
- Apply POG to a clean white absorbent cloth and apply to the spot.
- POG can also be applied to severe stains using a trigger spray bottle.
- Blot or tamp to remove the spot. Do not rub. Deep spots may need light brushing. Work from outside to the centre of large spots.
- Repeat if necessary.
- Extract with warm water or an emulsifier solution.
- Brush fabric to align fibres.
Apply to the cloth, not the surface, wherever possible. It limits how much solvent reaches backings and adhesives, and it reduces the vapour you breathe — which matters more on this product than most, because of the inhalation classification below.
Booster additive use
- Add 10–30 ml of POG per litre of ready-to-use prespray solution.
- Add 100–200 ml of POG per litre of Hydroforce concentrate (1:9 tip).
Safety
Please read this section before your next job. This listing previously recorded “Safety: Non-hazardous” and described the product as “easy and safe to use”. Both were wrong. POG carries more hazard statements than any other product in our Actichem range. It has been corrected.
Actichem’s safety data sheet for AP482, version 2.5 issued 18 September 2025, classifies POG as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL under the Model WHS Regulations. It is not classified as dangerous goods for transport.

⚠ H332 — harmful if inhaled
This is the classification that sets POG apart from the rest of our solvent range. Most solvents here carry H335, which is respiratory irritation. H332 is inhalation toxicity — a materially more serious statement.
POG is 30–60% ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, the highest concentration of that solvent in our range. Work with ventilation, use a respirator with an organic vapour filter for extended or enclosed work, and do not use it as a spray in an unventilated room.
This pack is supplied as a trigger spray, so spraying is the normal way it is used. Open windows or run air movers before you start, keep your face out of the mist, and use the lowest number of passes that does the job. Where you are working in a small enclosed space — a car interior, a bathroom, a cupboard — apply POG to a cloth and work from the cloth instead of spraying directly.
⚠ AUH019 — may form explosive peroxides
This is a storage-age hazard, not a use hazard, and it is unusual enough to explain properly.
Certain solvents slowly react with atmospheric oxygen to form peroxides, which concentrate as the liquid evaporates and can become shock or heat sensitive. Old stock is therefore more hazardous than fresh stock — the opposite of the intuition most people have about chemicals losing strength.
- Date the container when you open it and rotate stock so old product is used first.
- Keep containers tightly closed and out of sunlight. Peroxide formation is accelerated by air and light.
- Do not use, and do not attempt to move, a container with visible crystals or solid deposits around the cap or in the liquid. Contact us or a licensed disposal contractor.
- Do not evaporate it to dryness or distil it.
We have asked Actichem to advise a recommended maximum storage period and will publish it here when they respond.
⚠ H304 — the aspiration hazard
H304 means may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. The risk is not poisoning from a large dose; it is that a small amount reaching the lungs causes chemical pneumonitis, which can be fatal and can develop hours later.
- Never siphon or transfer by mouth, and never decant into an unlabelled drink container.
- If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth and call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor immediately.
- Symptoms can be delayed. Seek assessment even if the person seems fine.
⚠ H317 — d-limonene sensitisation
POG contains d-limonene at 10–30%. Once you are sensitised, you stay sensitised, and thereafter even brief contact can trigger a reaction. Citrus solvents are often treated as the mild option because they smell pleasant; on skin contact they are the ones most likely to cause a lasting problem.
Combustible, not flammable — the distinction
POG’s flash point is above 60 °C, so it is not a flammable liquid for transport purposes and ships without a dangerous goods surcharge. H227 still classifies it as a combustible liquid. Keep it away from ignition sources, hot surfaces and sparks, and never store it near a heat source.
Do not mix
Actichem list strong oxidising agents, strong acids and strong caustics as incompatible — specifically including nitrates, oxidising acids, chlorine bleaches and pool chlorine.
In our range that means keeping it away from Chlorosan, Stain Fix and Conquer O2. Given AUH019, storing this alongside an oxidiser is a particularly poor idea.
Personal protective equipment
Chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shields, protective clothing, and a respirator with an organic vapour filter where ventilation is limited or the product is sprayed. An eyewash unit should be available where it is decanted.
First aid
Swallowed — do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth with water. Immediately call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor and tell them the product is an aspiration hazard.
Inhalation. Move to fresh air immediately. Seek medical attention — H332 means the vapour is harmful, not merely irritating.
Eyes. Wash out immediately with fresh running water, holding the eyelids open. Seek medical attention.
Skin. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with soap and water. If a rash develops, stop using the product and seek medical advice.
