Product Overview

Actichem Gum Gone is a super-strength blend for removing gum, grease, tough oily soils and paints. It is formulated to work fast, even on tough gums and stubborn grease that other solvents cannot manage. A very valuable tool in the professional cleaner’s arsenal.

This is a great replacement for PowerClean Grease N Gum Gone.

This listing is the 500 ml trigger spray — the spotting-kit size. It contains the same chemistry as the 5 litre pack, not a weaker dilution.

Application Areas and Surface Suitability

Actichem Gum Gone is ideal for use on all carpet types. However, do not use on bitumen-backed carpeting.

What Is Actually in It

Gum Gone is over 60% xylene (CAS 1330-20-7), with ethylene glycol monobutyl ether at 10–30% and nonylphenol ethoxylate under 10%. It is Poisons Schedule 6 — the most tightly scheduled product in our spotting range.

Xylene is an extremely effective gum and adhesive solvent, and that is exactly why Gum Gone works where milder products fail. It is also a solvent we would not choose for extended work in an occupied house, a childcare room or an aged-care facility without serious ventilation.

This is the size most likely to end up in a domestic living room, so it is worth being direct: a trigger bottle makes it easy to use casually, and this is not a product to use casually. For occupied premises, talk to us about citrus-based alternatives before you order.

How to Use

Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity to chemicals. Do not use on acrylic, plastic or other solvent-sensitive surfaces, including bitumen and latex-backed carpeting.

Dilution: ready to use.

1. Sponge or scrape up any surface spot material.
2. Apply Gum Gone to a clean, white, absorbent cloth and apply to the spot.
3. Gum Gone can also be applied to severe stains using a trigger spray bottle.
4. Blot or tamp to remove the spot. Do not rub. Deep spots may need light brushing. Work from outside to the centre of large spots.
5. Repeat if necessary.
6. Extract with warm water or an emulsifier solution.
7. Brush fabric to align fibres.

Apply to the cloth, not the carpet, wherever possible. It limits how much solvent reaches the backing and adhesive, and it reduces the vapour you breathe. Spraying directly puts far more solvent into the air than dampening a cloth does.

Safety

Please read this section before your next job. This listing previously recorded only “Safety profile: Class 3 Flammable liquid”. That is a transport classification. It is not wrong, but it is badly incomplete — it tells you nothing about what this product does to a person. It has been corrected.

Actichem’s safety data sheet for AP483, version 4.5 issued 18 September 2025, classifies Gum Gone as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL under the Model WHS Regulations. It is also classified as DANGEROUS GOODS, but is not regulated for transport in packs of 5 litres or less. That is a freight rule, not a safety rating — and a smaller bottle is not a milder product.

⚠ H304 — the hazard the old wording hid

H304 means may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. With a hydrocarbon solvent the risk is not poisoning from a large dose. It is that a small amount reaching the lungs — from swallowing, from vomiting after swallowing, or from siphoning by mouth — causes chemical pneumonitis, which can be fatal and can develop hours later.

• Never decant this product into an unlabelled bottle, and never into anything that has held a drink. A 500 ml trigger bottle is exactly the size that gets refilled from something else, or refilled with something else.
• Never siphon or transfer by mouth.
• If it is swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth with water and call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor immediately. Vomiting is what draws it into the lungs.
• Symptoms can be delayed. Anyone who has swallowed it needs medical assessment even if they seem fine.

Keep this bottle labelled and keep it out of reach of children. Poisons Schedule 6 products should not be left unattended in an occupied home.

Flammability and vapour

Actichem do not state a flash point for this product; treat it as flammable regardless. Keep away from ignition sources, hot surfaces and sparks. Vapour is heavier than air and will collect in sub-floors, pits and confined spaces. Ventilate before and during use, and never use it near an operating heater or a truckmount exhaust.

H335 means the vapour irritates the airways. Spraying multiplies your exposure — in a closed room, with a trigger bottle, over an extended period, that is a genuine exposure. Open windows and doors and use forced ventilation.

Do not mix

Actichem list these as incompatible with Gum Gone:

• Oxidisers, permanganates and peroxides
• Ammonium persulfate, bromine dioxide, nitrates
• Strong acids — sulfuric, nitric, perchloric

That matters in a spotting kit. Keep this bottle away from Conquer O2, Spotaway U and Stain Fix — all peroxide-based. Solvent-soaked rags stored with an oxidiser is a fire, not a theory.

Personal protective equipment

Actichem specify PE/EVAL/PE gloves for this product. Glove material is not interchangeable across our solvent range — a single box of nitrile in the van does not cover all of them, and nitrile is not the recommended material here. Also wear chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shields, and use a respirator with an organic vapour filter where ventilation is limited or the product is sprayed.

Repeated skin contact with xylene-based solvents defats the skin and causes dermatitis.

First aid

Swallowed — do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth with water. Immediately call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor and tell them the product is an aspiration hazard.

Eyes. Wash out immediately with fresh running water, holding the eyelids open. Seek medical attention.

Skin. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash the area with soap and water.

Inhalation. Move to fresh air. Seek medical attention if breathing is difficult or irritation persists.
