Product Overview
Defender SV is a solvent-based water repellent for porous stone.
Defender SV is formulated to provide premium protection to sandstone, construction materials, engineered concrete, masonry surfaces, and cement and clay products. It employs high-performance impregnators to create a powerfully repellent substrate, locking out water and water-borne contaminants.
It is an impregnating sealer, not a coating. It penetrates and repels from within the pore structure rather than forming a film on top, which is why the finished appearance stays close to the natural surface and why it will not peel or flake the way a surface coating can.

How to Use
Read and understand the safety data sheet before use. Always pre-test in an inconspicuous area for appearance change and substrate compatibility — solvent-based impregnators can darken some stone.
Dilution: ready to use.
The surface must be clean, sound and completely dry before application. A solvent-based impregnator cannot penetrate a damp substrate, and applying it over trapped moisture is the most common cause of a poor result.
Apply evenly, avoid pooling, and remove any excess before it dries. Allow full cure before returning the area to service or exposing it to water.
Safety
Please read this section before your next job. This listing previously recorded only “Safety profile: Class 3 Flammable liquid”. That is a transport classification. It is not wrong, but it is badly incomplete — it tells you nothing about what this product does to a person. It has been corrected.
Actichem’s safety data sheet for AP672, version 2.2 issued 13 October 2025, classifies Defender SV as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL under the Model WHS Regulations. It is not regulated for transport in the 5 litre pack — a freight rule, not a safety rating.

⚠ Flash point 20 °C — the most flammable product in our solvent range
A flash point of 20 °C is below a normal Australian summer day. For most of the country, for most of the year, the vapour above this product is ignitable at ambient temperature. It does not need to be heated to become a fire risk — it already is one.
For comparison, Solv Sealer Pro flashes above 24 °C and Fabric Shield SV at 54 °C. Defender SV is the one that demands the most care.
- No ignition sources anywhere in the work area — no smoking, no grinders, no angle grinders on adjacent work, no pilot lights.
- Vapour is heavier than air and will flow downhill and collect in sub-floors, pits, trenches, stairwells and confined spaces. On external stone and paving work, that is exactly the terrain you are on.
- Never use it near an operating heater, generator or truckmount exhaust.
- Ventilate continuously. Do not rely on an open door in still air.
⚠ H304 — the hazard the old wording hid
H304 means may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. With a hydrocarbon solvent the risk is not poisoning from a large dose. It is that a small amount reaching the lungs — from swallowing, from vomiting after swallowing, or from siphoning by mouth — causes chemical pneumonitis, which can be fatal and can develop hours later.
- Never siphon or transfer this product by mouth, and never decant it into an unlabelled drink container.
- If it is swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth with water and call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor immediately. Vomiting is what draws it into the lungs.
- Symptoms can be delayed. Anyone who has swallowed it needs medical assessment even if they seem fine.
⚠ It will damage equipment and adjacent materials
Actichem state that Defender SV dissolves rubber, many plastics, resins and some coatings. Naphtha makes up over 60% of the product.
Check before you fill a sprayer or start work near:
- Sprayer seals, gaskets and hoses — use solvent-rated equipment only. A standard garden sprayer will fail, sometimes mid-job.
- Vinyl skirting, PVC downpipes, plastic trims and expansion joints
- Painted or factory-coated surfaces adjacent to the stone
- Synthetic turf, pool surrounds and rubber-backed matting
Pre-test on any synthetic surface. This is the most common way this product causes an expensive problem, and it is not a safety issue — it is a damage bill.
Do not mix
Actichem list strong oxidising agents — nitrates, oxidising acids, pool chlorine and chlorine bleach — along with caustics and strong acids. In our range that means keeping it well away from Chlorosan and the peroxide products. Solvent-soaked rags stored with an oxidiser is a fire, not a theory.
Personal protective equipment
Actichem specify neoprene, nitrile or PE/EVAL/PE gloves for this product. Glove material is not interchangeable across our solvent range. Also wear chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shields, and use a respirator with an organic vapour filter — sealing work is extended application over a large area, which is a very different exposure to a single spot treatment.
First aid
Swallowed — do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse the mouth with water. Immediately call a Poisons Information Centre or doctor and tell them the product is an aspiration hazard.
Eyes. Wash out immediately with fresh running water, holding the eyelids open. Seek medical attention.
Skin. Remove contaminated clothing — solvent-soaked clothing against skin prolongs exposure and is itself a fire risk. Wash with soap and water.
Inhalation. Move to fresh air. Seek medical attention if breathing is difficult or irritation persists.
