Where it sits in the assembly
The Series 31 valve is a serviceable assembly: a shut-off disk that does the sealing, a brass nut, and this lock nut. If the valve has been apart and will not hold its adjustment, or the nut has been rounded off by pliers, this is the replacement.
Rebuild rather than replace
The valve body outlives its seals and fasteners several times over. Keeping the small parts on the shelf is what keeps a gun in service instead of in a bin.
