Where a hand groomer beats a long-handled one
Stairs, vehicle carpet, and the fringes of oriental rugs — anywhere you need control and pressure in a small area, and anywhere a long handle cannot reach the angle. On stairs in particular a hand groomer lets you set the nap on the riser as well as the tread, which is what makes a staircase look finished.
Why grooming is the last thing you do
Grooming a carpet after cleaning sets the pile in one direction, lifts crushed areas and opens the pile so it dries faster. It also removes wand marks, which is the thing a customer notices most and mentions first.
Groom while the carpet is still damp, working in one consistent direction, and finish toward the exit so you are not walking back over it.
