Product Overview

Instagloss is a high-gloss acrylic polymer floor polish. It blends durability and hardness for traffic, black heel mark resistance, and wet-look repairability.

It is easy to apply and dries to an instant brilliant gloss, which suits institutions, medical facilities, offices, homes, retail outlets and similar. Its levelling properties are good enough that it can be used as a single-step finish, without a base sealer. The high solids content builds quickly, so fewer coats reach the required gloss and protection.

Which pack size do you need?

This is the 15 litre bulk pack — around 750 to 1,200 m² per coat, for contractors doing floor work at volume. The 5 litre suits smaller jobs.

Application areas and surface suitability

Suitable for vinyl, linoleum, slate, terrazzo, terracotta, marble and granite.

On stone surfaces and polished concrete, apply a base coat of Instaseal first. Porous stone will drink polish, and sealing first is both cheaper and gives a better finish than trying to build gloss directly on an absorbent substrate.

How to Use

Read the safety data sheet before use — see the safety section below, which has changed substantially. Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location.

Preparation

Strip off old polish and wax residues with a floor coatings remover. Rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water and let it dry completely. Polish applied over residue or damp floor will cloud, and the only fix is to strip it and start again.

Dilution

Ready to use. Do not dilute.

Application

1. Apply 3 to 5 coats depending on the porosity of the surface and expected traffic. If Instaseal has been used as a base coat, 2 to 3 coats will do — and Instagloss can go on as soon as the Instaseal is touch dry.
2. Apply with a clean polish applicator, spreading a thin coat using slightly overlapping strokes.
3. Allow 30 to 40 minutes to dry.
4. Apply each subsequent coat at right angles to the previous coat. This is what gives even coverage — applying every coat in the same direction builds ridges you will see under lights.
5. Allow at least 12 hours before returning the floor to normal use. Polish that is dry to touch is not yet cured; putting traffic on it early is the most common cause of early failure.

Repeated thin, evenly spread coats beat one heavy application. A heavy coat skins over on top while still soft underneath, and that is what produces the soft, marking finish people blame on the product.

Coverage: 50–80 m² per litre per coat, depending on porosity.

Maintenance

Maintain the finish with ProNeutro neutral cleaner. Neutral is the operative word — an alkaline cleaner will progressively soften and dull an acrylic polish, which is why floors maintained with general-purpose detergent stop responding to buffing.

Buff regularly with a white, grey or red pad using an electric or battery polishing machine capable of 150 to 1000 rpm.

Safety

Please read this section before your next job. This listing previously recorded “Safety profile: Non-hazardous”. That was seriously wrong, and this is one of the most significant corrections we have made across our whole range.

Actichem’s safety data sheet for AP422, version 2.4 issued 5 August 2025, classifies Instagloss as a hazardous chemical with the signal word DANGER.

• H360Df — may damage the unborn child. Suspected of damaging fertility. (Reproductive Toxicity Category 1B)
• H317 — may cause an allergic skin reaction (Skin Sensitiser Category 1B)
• Not a dangerous good. No poisons schedule.

⚠ H360Df — reproductive toxicity

This is the most serious class of hazard statement in the GHS system, and it needs to be read properly rather than skimmed.

H360Df is not an irritation warning. It says the product may damage an unborn child, and is suspected of damaging fertility. The driver is dibutyl phthalate (CAS 84-74-2) at under 10% — a plasticiser that is restricted or being phased out in a number of product categories internationally for exactly this reason.

What this means practically:

• Anyone who is pregnant, may become pregnant, or is trying to conceive should not apply this product. That applies to the applicator and to anyone else in the area while it is being applied and drying. This is a conversation worth having with your team rather than assuming.
• Ventilate the area properly during application and drying. You are coating a whole floor, so the exposed surface area is large and the exposure period is hours, not minutes.
• Keep the area clear of occupants during application and the drying period. In a medical facility, a childcare centre, an aged care home or a residence, plan the job around that requirement rather than working around people.
• Do not eat, drink or smoke while applying. Wash before breaks and at the end of the job.

We are being direct about this because “non-hazardous” on this page may have led people to apply it without ventilation, with others present, or while pregnant. We are sorry. If that describes a job you have done, the sensible step is to speak to a doctor rather than worry about it privately.

⚠ H317 — skin sensitisation

Sensitisation is cumulative and permanent. Once you are sensitised, you stay sensitised, and thereafter even brief contact can trigger dermatitis. Floor applicators who lay polish week after week are the exposure group this catches. Keep it off your skin as routine, not as a reaction to a rash.

What it reacts with

Avoid strong acids, strong oxidisers, permanganates, nitrates, oxidising agents and chlorine bleaches. In practice: do not strip a floor with a chlorine product and then coat over it without a thorough rinse.

First aid

Eyes. Rinse with water.

Skin. Remove contaminated clothing and flush with water. If a rash develops, stop using the product and seek medical advice.

Inhalation. Remove to fresh air.

Swallowed. Give water and contact a Poisons Information Centre.
