Sapphire Ball Valve 1/4 FP Brass (PP15-808012)

Regular price $194.24

Overview

Brass ball valve, 1/4 inch FP. Sapphire part number 23-001, listed in the parts schedule as Vlv, Ball 1/4FP Brass. Also supplied as Prochem PP15-808012.

Rated to 3,000 psi, and repairable by replacing two O-rings rather than replacing the valve.

Where it earns its place

This is the valve for high-pressure hard-surface work — concrete, stone and tile cleaning, where line pressures are well beyond what a general-purpose valve will take.

A 3,000 psi rating on a quarter-inch valve is not a marketing number. Hard-surface tools run pressures that will split a fitting rated for carpet work, and the failure happens at the moment the trigger closes and the line spikes.

Use it properly and it lasts

A ball valve is designed to be fully open or fully closed. Using it part-open as a flow control wears a groove in the seats at that one position, and after that it will not seal anywhere. If you want less flow, change the jet or the orifice — not the valve position.

Operate it briskly. Easing a ball valve slowly across its travel under pressure is harder on the seats than moving it decisively.

Close it before you disconnect anything, not after.

Repair rather than replace

Sapphire's own note is that this valve can be repaired by replacing two O-rings. That is worth knowing before you order a new valve.

  • Weeping around the stem — stem seal. Repairable.
  • Passing when fully closed — seats. If the ball is unmarked, seals may fix it; if the ball is scored, the valve is finished.
  • Stiff to operate — usually deposits rather than wear. Flush the line and work the valve before condemning it.

Ask us about the O-rings before you buy a valve.

Maintenance

Flush the line with clean water at the end of the day, particularly after anything alkaline or anything that dries hard. Deposits in a ball valve are what turn a smooth valve into a stiff one, and a stiff valve gets forced, which is what wears the seats.
