Product Overview

Actichem Protein Spotter is a protein and blood stain remover for carpets that removes a wide variety of organic stains, including food, gravy, beverages, and blood. It combines powerful protein-dissolving chemistry with wetting and penetration technology to dissolve protein soils and release them from fibres and fabrics.

This listing is the 500 ml trigger spray — the spotting-kit size. It is supplied ready to use. No dilution is required.

Benefits

  • Innovative chemistry — Protein Spotter not only provides a robust solution to a challenging problem but also uses modern technology to ensure that every dollar spent delivers maximum results.
  • Protein stain removal — removes stains from egg, gravy, milk, blood, vomit, and other protein sources.
  • Dynamic penetration — superwetting and penetrating agents ensure Protein Spotter quickly and effectively wets out the fibres, carpet backing, and even the substrate below, eliminating all contaminated areas.
  • Easy to use — comes in a convenient, ready-to-use form, and the trigger bottle places it exactly on the spot.

Application Areas and Surface Suitability

Protein Spotter is ideal for tough stains and spills in homes, healthcare facilities, nursing homes, schools, and more. It is effective on vomit, blood, urine, coffee, and other protein-based stains, including betadine and iodine.

Protein Spotter can be used on carpets, water-cleanable upholstery and clothing.

How to Use

Read and understand the safety data sheet before use. Always pre-test in an inconspicuous location for substrate sensitivity to chemicals.

Dilution: ready to use — no dilution necessary.

  1. Scrape or blot up all loose surface soil.
  2. Apply Protein Spotter undiluted to the stain area.
  3. Apply this solution onto the fibre or fabric until it is wetted out.
  4. Agitate the solution using a carpet rake or upholstery cleaning brush.
  5. Allow 10 – 20 minutes for reaction time.
  6. Rinse extract using Actichem Rinse Pro.
  7. Allow to dry. Assist drying by increasing ventilation.

Safety

Please read this section. This listing previously described Protein Spotter as “Non-hazardous”. That was wrong. It has been corrected.

Actichem’s safety data sheet for AP495, version 2.3 issued 23 September 2025, classifies Protein Spotter as a HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL under the Model WHS Regulations. It is not classified as dangerous goods for transport. A smaller bottle is not a milder product.

  • Signal word: WARNING
  • H315 — causes skin irritation
  • H319 — causes serious eye irritation
  • pH as supplied: 11.8 per the current SDS
  • Poisons Schedule: not applicable

This is a genuinely milder product than Actichem Bust, which is classified DANGER with H314 — severe skin burns and eye damage. Where the job does not need Bust’s strength, Protein Spotter is the better choice on safety grounds as well as cost. Both are alkaline ammoniated spotters and both need the warning below.

⚠ Never mix with chlorine products

Protein Spotter is ammonia-based — it contains ammonium hydroxide and monoethanolamine, which is where the mild ammonia odour comes from. Ammonia and hypochlorite react to form chloramine gas, which causes severe respiratory injury and can be fatal in a confined space such as a bathroom, sub-floor or plant room.

Never use it on the same surface, in the same bucket, or through the same equipment as:

A trigger bottle in a spotting kit is exactly how this happens — the bottle travels to a bathroom that has just been treated with a chlorine product. If a chlorine step and a protein step are both required on the same job, rinse thoroughly with clean water between them, ventilate, and use separate clearly labelled equipment.

A note on where this warning comes from. Actichem’s safety data sheet lists incompatible materials as “none known”. We do not agree, and we have raised it with them. The chloramine reaction is well established chemistry and we would rather tell you than leave a gap on the page.

Protein Spotter is also alkaline. Do not mix it with acid products — in our range that includes Brownaway, Rust Remover, Crete Clean and the tile and grout restorers.

Personal protective equipment

Actichem specify butyl chemical protective gloves — note that nitrile is not the recommended material for this product — with safety glasses or goggles. At pH 11.8 this is a strongly alkaline product; prolonged skin contact will irritate even though it is not classified corrosive.

First aid

Eyes. Wash out immediately with fresh running water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open. Seek medical attention.

Skin. Remove contaminated clothing and wash the area with soap and water. Seek medical advice if irritation persists.

Inhalation. Move to fresh air. If chlorine or chloramine exposure is suspected, seek medical attention even if symptoms seem mild — they can worsen for several hours.
