Tramex RWS – Roof and Wall Scanner
The Tramex RWS Roof and Wall Scanner is a multi-mode non-invasive impedance scanner designed for the instant, precise and non-destructive evaluation of moisture conditions and leak tracing in roofing per ASTM D7954, and in wall systems of the building envelope.

How it works
The RWS transmits an alternating electric field between a transmit and a receive electrode. Signal strength varies with the moisture present in the material under test. Having calibrated the RWS on a known acceptably dry area, the scanner gives instant comparative readings as it is moved over the surface, which is how a moisture map is built and a leak traced back to its source.
Four sensitivity settings are available: roofing mode with high and low sensitivity, and EIFS/foam roof insulation mode with high and low sensitivity.
Limitations – where the RWS will not read reliably
Impedance scanning does not work through conductive materials. The RWS is not suitable for:
- Some EPDM, butyl rubber and other conductive roofing membranes
- Hard coat stucco, wire lath or wire mesh reinforced finishes
If the roof you inspect most is one of those, the RWS is the wrong instrument and we would rather tell you before you buy it.

Frequently asked questions
RWS or DEC Scanner?
The RWS is a handheld scanner reading to 100 mm, used on roofs and walls, and it is the instrument for EIFS and foam systems. The DEC Scanner DS2 is a large wheeled-format scanner with a 609 mm wide electrode mat reading to 152 mm, built for surveying large flat commercial roofs quickly. Choose the RWS for wall systems, detail work and tracing; the DS2 for covering area.
Does it read moisture content as a percentage?
No. Readings are comparative on a 0 to 100 reference scale, calibrated against a known dry area on the same roof. That is what ASTM D7954 describes – the survey identifies wet areas relative to dry ones, which is then confirmed by core sampling where required.
Can it be used on a wet roof surface?
Surface water will influence readings. Survey when the surface is dry, or the scanner will report the water sitting on top of the membrane rather than the moisture within the system.
Is the telescopic handle suitable for wall scanning?
Tramex specifies the telescopic handle for roof use only. Wall scanning is done handheld.
Is a carry case included?
A leather carry case is listed as an accessory by Tramex. CCW also stocks the carry case for the RWS and extension handle for transporting both together.
