Why a contact probe as well as infrared
The MMS3 and HygroMaster 2 both read surface temperature by infrared. Infrared is fast, but it under-reads on low-emissivity surfaces — glass, gloss paint, polished tile, bare metal. A contact probe is not affected by emissivity, which matters when the reading is being compared against dew point to decide whether a surface will attract condensation.
